The second half of the album is pretty solid, but not quite as compelling in comparison so it misses out on a 4 stars, but only just. Ive never heard a track tackle the subject of weaves or black womens hairstyles in general and it was really refreshing to hear it discussed on this LP.
Mine is an example of a track with a very clear message that totally translates. Owwf, the first half of this record has an incredible run of tracks. The album flows well as a mixtape and it really is solid, but its a long way to the top. Sometimes the mix doesnt make her justice, other times she is just being really immature and not putting enough effort into writing and singing. Her mastery of techniques classic and modern alike is certainly fun, but the smattering of personal tracks leave me thirsting for what could have been and some of these songs should not have made the final cut. It leads her to sometimes settle for superficial explorations of rap tropes or to put mainstream ambitions above artistic quality.
This mindset explains the inconsistency when it comes to both quality and style.
